Wondering whether bariatric surgery could be the right weight loss solution for you?
In 2018, the number of bariatric surgeries performed that year compared to the year before increased by nearly 11 percent. Bariatric surgery is providing many of our obese patients with hope when it comes to losing weight. Of course, before undergoing bariatric surgery, our Irving, TX, weight loss specialist and board-certified surgeon Dr. Chukwuma Apakama will need to perform a thorough evaluation to make sure that you are right for surgery.
Who’s a good candidate for bariatric surgery?
Do you feel like you’ve tried everything to lose weight, but nothing seems to work? If you have a body mass index of 40 or higher, or if you have a body mass index between 35-39 and you’re dealing with chronic health problems such as high blood pressure then you could qualify for weight loss surgery.
Before undergoing weight loss surgery here at our Irving, TX, practice, you will need to go through an extensive evaluation with our surgeon Dr. Apakama. This screening process will ensure that you are qualified for this procedure and that you are healthy enough to undergo surgery.
What is the purpose of bariatric surgery?
Surgery is not only a great way to help our obese patients lose weight but also reduces their risk for potentially dangerous health problems such as type 2 diabetes, fatty liver disease, and stroke. Even once you’ve undergone surgery, you may need to come in for regular monitoring and follow-up visits to make sure that your lifestyle, nutrition, and behaviors are supporting a healthier lifestyle. We support you every step of the way, even after surgery and recovery, to ensure that your results last.
What is the bariatric surgery process like?
Once you undergo the extensive evaluation and screening procedure, we will provide you with all the information you need to know to prepare for surgery. You may require certain testing before your surgery. We will also provide you with certain dietary changes you will need to make beforehand.
Due to the nature and extent of the surgery, it is performed by our board-certified surgeon under general anesthesia. Most bariatric surgeries these days are performed laparoscopically, which is far less invasive than traditional weight-loss surgeries and promises fewer post-procedural side effects, fewer complications, and a faster recovery time. The procedure will take several hours and you may need to stay in the hospital for a few days before going home.
The recovery process will depend on whether or not you underwent a laparoscopic or traditional weight loss surgery. After laparoscopic bariatric surgery, you may be released from the hospital within 2-3 days. Most patients can return to their everyday routine within 3-5 weeks. During the healing process, you will come in regularly for monitoring.
